Types of Orangeries

Choosing the right structure and materials ensures your orangery complements your home and performs efficiently all year round.

Brick Built Orangeries

Brick-built orangeries provide a solid, extension-style structure that blends seamlessly with your existing property. With more brickwork than glazing, they offer improved insulation and a more permanent, room-like feel.

uPVC Orangeries

uPVC orangeries are a cost-effective option that still delivers excellent thermal performance. They are available in a variety of finishes and colours, providing a practical, low-maintenance solution for many homeowners.

Orangery Styles & Design Features

Orangeries can be customised to suit both traditional and contemporary properties.

Lantern Roof Orangeries

Lantern roofs are a key feature of many orangeries, creating a central glazed section that allows natural light to flood into the space. This adds height, brightness, and a premium architectural feel.

Contemporary Orangeries

Modern orangeries focus on clean lines, large glass panels, and minimalist design. They are ideal for creating open-plan living areas that connect seamlessly with your garden.

Traditional Orangeries

Traditional designs incorporate classic detailing, brick pillars, and decorative finishes to complement period properties. These styles create a timeless and elegant extension to your home.

Did you know?

Orangery vs Conservatory – What’s the difference?

Many homeowners wonder whether an orangery or conservatory is best. Orangeries have more brickwork and a solid structure, offering better insulation and a classic, extension-style look. Conservatories use more glass, creating a lighter, garden-room feel and plenty of natural light, though they may need upgraded glazing for year-round comfort. If you’re looking for a space that feels like a true extension of your home, an orangery is often the preferred choice. Our team can help you decide the best option for you.

Guidelines

Do I need Planning Permission for an Orangery?

In most cases, you do not need planning permission for an orangery if it falls under permitted development rules. Typically, this means it is a single-storey extension with a depth of up to 3–4 metres depending on your property type, a maximum height of 4 metres, does not cover more than half of your garden, and is not built at the front of the house.

When Planning Permission is required

  • The extension exceeds 4m (detached) or 3m (semi-detached/terraced) in depth.
  • It is built at the front of the house or on a side wall facing a road.
  • The highest point is taller than the existing roof eaves.
  • Your home is a listed building or in a conservation area.
  • The orangery covers more than 50% of the garden or surrounding land.

Building Regulations Compliance

Even if planning permission is not required, building regulations usually still apply.

Orangeries often require approval for structural safety, insulation, ventilation, and drainage, particularly because they contain more brickwork than traditional conservatories.
